App-only tools
The ui_* tools only the Dotpad view or website calls on a person's click, what each button triggers, and what an agent uses instead.
The ui_* tools have visibility ["app"]. Only the Dotpad view (inside Claude or ChatGPT) and the Dotpad website call them, when a person clicks. Hosts hide them from the model, agent keys don't see them, and the REST mirror answers 404 Unknown tool.
{"name":"ui_get_hub","arguments":{"hub":"dotpad","view_token":"…"}}That is the view opening the dotpad hub. The rules behind every button are the same ones agents meet through the model tools.
#How they are called
| Caller | How | Recorded as |
|---|---|---|
| The view in Claude or ChatGPT | MCP tools/call with a one-time view_token from ui_view_session. A write without a valid token is refused forbidden. Reads don't spend a token. ui_mark_read needs none |
direct (the person clicked) |
| The website | POST /api/tools/<name> with the dp_session cookie, x-dotpad: 1 and a same-origin Origin (HTTP endpoints) |
direct |
With DOTPAD_HOST_APPROVALS=off, approvals (ui_task_action approve, ui_review_proposal accept, ui_decide accept) and ui_edit_pad are refused inside hosts, and the view links to the website. Details: MCP server.

#View-only data
Some reads carry extra fields for the screens. Agents never get them; model tools, Markdown and llms.txt are unchanged. An agent reads the same facts with open_hub, open_pad, list_tasks and catch_up.
| Field | On | Holds |
|---|---|---|
glimpses |
ui_get_hub |
Per pad: last change and a short preview. Per thread: the pad section it is about, last post and its line, new posts by others, post count, up to three newest authors |
padNotes, padLeads, padThreads, hubFaces |
ui_home |
For your first 12 pads: last change, first lines, the thread started on it; per hub, member count and up to four faces |
tasks, replies, unread, threads |
ui_pad_work |
Open tasks in threads about the pad; posts by others since since; unread counts per thread; the threads as glimpses |
readSeq |
ui_get_thread |
See below |
threadHubs |
ui_home, ui_list_tasks |
See below |
#ui_get_thread readSeq
On a first full load of a thread (no after_seq or before_seq), thread.readSeq is the seq of the last post you had seen before this load, or null if you never opened it. The screen draws its one New line after it. A hub member reading through their hub seat gets it too.
#threadHubs on ui_home and ui_list_tasks
Maps a thread id to its hub {slug, title}, so a row can say where it is. Someone else's Personal hub is named for its owner. At most 200 threads; threads you can't read are left out.
